Every year 80% of New Year’s Resolutions fail by February and 92% don’t succeed at all. The main reason why these resolutions don’t succeed comes down to motivation. Motivation is one of the most important factors that lead to success. To better understand how to build motivation you will first need to fully understand what motivation is. The word motivation directly means the general willingness of someone to do something. The main factors in getting motivated are setting an achievable goal, becoming disciplined, and staying interested. It takes a process to get and stay motivated to reach your goals.
Work on getting interested. This is an important step in getting motivated. To do this come up with ideas that will help improve your life for the better. Some example ideas may be that you want to: lose weight, gain muscle, run a marathon, make more money, make more friends, or become a better person. After coming up with an objective come up with how this goal will benefit your life. Understand how much happier you will be when this goal is accomplished.
One way of doing this is to make a friendly competition out of it. You can even go one step further and place a reward for the winner of the competition. Competition breeds interest and will really help you focus on your goal. Some example competitions that you can have with someone else are: who can complete a mile fastest, who can lose the most weight, who get achieve better grades, and who can do the most push ups.
Setting a Reachable Goal
Setting goals is the second step in this process and is necessary in order to become motivated. Set a defined and achievable goal. Instead of saying something like “I want to lose weight” it should be “I want to lose 30 lbs. in 3 months.” The next step in this process is to break down the goal. The process should be written down on paper and a weekly goal should be created.
Keep Your Goal in Mind
Thinking about your goal as much as possible will lead to you achieving your goal. The more you have the goal running through your mind the more likely you are to work on and complete that objective. Some of the best ways to keep this goal on your mind is to write your goal down and what you will gain from achieving this goal. After you do this you should place these in areas that you will see often such as your steering wheel, walls, refrigerator, or even your bathroom mirrors. As you are continuously reminded of your goal you will become more motivated to achieve it.
This is the hardest part in the process as when it comes time to work on your goal the temptation of quitting may enter your mind. You just have to remember that every SINGLE day that you work on your goal you will be one step closer to accomplishing it. The step of being disciplined is prioritizing your commitments. If you say you want to go to the gym and get in shape you should realize that skipping a day is not okay. If you skip one day you will skip other days and doing this will stop you from accomplishing your goals.
You need to make sure that you are thinking positive thoughts. It is important that you are thinking more about the benefits of achieving your goal rather than how hard the process is in achieving this goal. Anyone can become a positive person it just takes practice and discipline. You have to keep yourself on track and make sure that you follow through. Instead of saying things like the glass is half empty try saying the glass is half full. Another example is saying your 50 years young instead of 50 years old.
Every single week that you stick to your goals you should reward yourself with the rewards increasing as you get closer to achieving your goal. Rewarding yourself on a weekly basis will assist in keeping you interested in continuing your goal.
In order to stay motivated you should reflect on your progress on a specified day at least once a week. As you continue to do this your motivation will build and you will become more motivated to accomplish goals. For a lot of people, progress is the most motivating factor of them all. Progress brings excitement and makes accomplishing goals fun. Some ways that really help with realizing your progress is to record it. You can do this by creating progress videos and by posting your accomplishments on social media, internet forums, YouTube, or even in a journal.
During tough times you may need extra motivation. Finding extra motivation is not a substitute for following the process but may give you that extra push in accomplishing your tasks.
